Trapped wind causes, symptoms and remedies
What is trapped wind?
We all have some gas in our guts!
Some of the gas, or wind, is produced by the bacteria which digests our food.
But most of it comes from the air we swallow when eating and drinking, particularly when eating quickly or gulping down a drink. When we’re sitting up the wind tends to travel upwards and escapes through burping.
But when we’re lying down it often goes in the opposite direction which can cause you to feel bloated and pass wind.

What causes trapped wind?
Alongside swallowing air when we eat and drink, excess gas in the gut can come from food including vegetables such as broccoli, cabbage and cauliflower, high fibre food and fizzy drinks.
It can also be related to a digestive problem such as constipation, a food intolerance and gluten intolerance.
Everyone has trapped wind now and again and the symptoms tend to soon clear, however some people are known to be more sensitive to normal amounts of gas in the stomach.
How to treat trapped wind
Changes in diet and lifestyle can help.
If you know the foods that tend to give you wind and make you feel bloated, try cutting down on these triggers. Keeping a food and drink diary may help to identify these.
Drink plenty of water and exercise regularly as this can help to improve digestion and prevent or relieve trapped wind.
Avoid large meals and opt for smaller more frequent meals instead. You can try releasing trapped wind by massaging your stomach from right to left.
