Indigestion causes, symptoms and remedies
What is indigestion?
Indigestion, also known as dyspepsia, is a common condition most of us experience at some point1, and it tends to be related to eating.2
It can sometimes be accompanied by heartburn, which is felt as a burning pain behind the breastbone.2
It’s often caused by stomach acid which can irritate the stomach lining or the throat, which is known as acid reflux.1
While it can be uncomfortable and sometimes painful, for most people it’s a mild, occasional condition and the symptoms can be self-treated with antacid remedies.2

What causes indigestion?
There are a number of reasons why we get indigestion but stomach acid irritating the lining or refluxing into the oesophagus (the food pipe) and up into the throat is usually the main cause.1
Fatty and spicy foods, tomatoes, chocolate and drinks such as alcohol and coffee can cause or make this worse.1 It can also be a result of lifestyle factors such as being overweight, stress and anxiety, smoking and pregnancy*.1 Sometimes indigestion and heartburn can be signs of another medical condition so if symptoms persist or worsen speak to your GP.
